Phosgene (chemical formula COCl₂) is a colourless, highly reactive gas (liquefies under pressure) with a faint odour often described as “musty hay.” It is an important chemical intermediate used primarily in the manufacture of isocyanates, polycarbonates, carbamates, acyl chlorides and other specialty chemicals. Phosgene is extremely toxic by inhalation and must only be handled in controlled industrial settings by trained personnel.
